Open Letter: Meet Sultana!

My name is Sultana Karim and I have 1 child. I am a survivor of childhood trauma. I struggled in my pregnancy with anxiety and depression and then I struggled in postpartum after experiencing birth trauma and my baby being admitted to the NICU. I’ve experienced pregnancy loss, losing myself in the chaos of life, losing a parent, etc. I am also military and law enforcement spouse. So, my world is constantly changes and adjustments due to whatever the military or police department throws our way. And of course, I have so many other roles and experiences. Just like you! I shared these experiences because it fuels why I am a therapist. I struggled with finding a therapist that understood me and my experiences. That is why I believe that when experiencing stressors or traumas, it is important to feel understood, heard, and seen.

Now that you know a bit about me personally, let me share with you my professional experiences. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in Maryland. I am a certified clinical trauma professional (CCTP) and a certified perinatal mental health professional (PMH-C). I have over 10 years of experience treating children, adolescents, and adults with a variety of behavioral, mental, and emotional concerns in varies settings like domestic violence shelters, children advocacy center, hospital, community settings, and outpatient. However, in my private practice, Karim Counseling Services, PLLC, I provide therapy services for adults via telehealth and focus on two areas: perinatal mental health and trauma. For perinatal mental health, I specialize in supporting and treating pregnancy and postpartum depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder or other trauma disorders; birth trauma; fertility issues, pregnancy and infant loss; adjusting to parenthood and other stressors. For trauma, I specialize in supporting and treating childhood trauma, loss, sexual trauma, and intimate partner & domestic violence.
