You may know the experience is over, yet still find yourself replaying what happened, avoiding reminders, feeling on edge, or carrying the weight of a traumatic birth, pregnancy loss, medical experience, military-related trauma, or painful experiences from your past. EMDR Intensives provide dedicated time and support to help you process what happened and move toward healing without waiting months for weekly therapy.

You've Talked About It, But Still Feel Stuck

Many people who seek an EMDR Therapy Intensive have already spent months—or even years—trying to move forward.

They may understand logically that the event is over, yet their body continues to react as though the danger is still present.

Perhaps you find yourself replaying what happened over and over, avoiding reminders of the experience, feeling constantly on edge, or carrying guilt and self-blame that won't seem to go away. You may know what happened wasn't your fault, yet still feel weighed down by it.

For some, this looks like a traumatic birth that continues to feel unfinished. For others, it may be pregnancy loss, a difficult medical experience, military-related trauma, or painful experiences from childhood.

An EMDR Therapy Intensive provides dedicated time and space to focus on healing without the interruptions that often occur in weekly therapy.

Unlike traditional weekly therapy, an EMDR Therapy Intensive provides dedicated time to focus on healing without having to stop and restart the process each week. Many clients find that this concentrated approach allows them to make meaningful progress toward the goals that brought them to therapy.

What Is an EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR Therapy Intensive is an extended therapy session designed to provide focused time and support for trauma processing. Rather than meeting for 50–60 minutes each week, an intensive allows us to dedicate several hours—or multiple days—to your healing process.

This concentrated format can be especially helpful for individuals navigating birth trauma, pregnancy and infant loss, medical trauma, military-related trauma, first responder trauma, or painful experiences from their past who are looking for a more focused approach than traditional weekly therapy.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process experiences that may feel stuck or unresolved. During an intensive, we use EMDR and other trauma-informed approaches to support healing while maintaining attention to your pace, safety, and readiness.

Why Work With Sultana for an EMDR Intensive?

Choosing an EMDR Intensive is an investment in your healing, and finding the right therapist matters.

As a Certified EMDR Therapist and Certified Perinatal Mental Health professional (PMH-C), I specialize in helping adults heal from birth trauma, reproductive trauma and loss, medical trauma, military and first responder trauma, childhood trauma, and other overwhelming life experiences. With more than 15 years of experience across hospitals, community mental health settings, domestic violence programs, adoption agencies, child advocacy centers, and private practice, I understand not only the impact of trauma itself, but also the unique challenges that can arise during pregnancy, postpartum, military service, caregiving, and major life transitions.

As a military spouse and law enforcement family member, I also bring a personal understanding of the unique stressors, transitions, and challenges that can affect military and first responder families.

EMDR Intensives are designed to provide focused time for meaningful trauma healing without waiting months for weekly therapy.

My approach integrates EMDR with Internal Family Systems (IFS), DBT skills, mindfulness, and somatic approaches to help clients process trauma, strengthen self-compassion, and reconnect with a greater sense of safety, confidence, and choice.

EMDR Therapy Intensives are not simply longer therapy sessions

They require thoughtful preparation, careful pacing, and attention to each client's unique history, strengths, and goals. My role is to create a structured, supportive experience that honors your unique history, goals, and pace while promoting meaningful healing.

Virtual EMDR Therapy Intensives are available throughout Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, and Michigan.

Weekly Therapy vs. EMDR Intensives

Both weekly therapy and EMDR Intensives can be effective approaches to trauma treatment. The best fit depends on your goals, schedule, readiness, and the type of support you are seeking. For some clients, an intensive offers an opportunity to dedicate focused time to healing without the interruptions that naturally occur between weekly sessions.

Many clients seeking support for birth trauma, reproductive trauma and loss, medical trauma, military-related trauma, first responder trauma, or childhood trauma choose an EMDR Intensive when they want dedicated time to focus on a specific treatment goal.

Weekly Therapy

  • 50–60 minute sessions
  • Time to integrate insights between appointments
  • Ongoing support over time
  • Often helpful for building skills and addressing multiple concerns

EMDR Intensive

  • Several hours or multiple days of focused trauma treatment
  • Greater continuity and focus
  • Fewer interruptions in trauma processing
  • May be helpful for addressing specific trauma targets or goals

The Intensive Process

EMDR Therapy Intensives are designed to provide a structured and supportive process that includes preparation, focused trauma treatment, and follow-up support.

Consultation

We'll schedule a free consultation to discuss your goals, what you would like to address, and whether an EMDR Intensive is the right fit for your needs.

Initial Evaluation & Planning

During a 90-minute evaluation session, we'll discuss your history, goals, and treatment targets. Together, we'll identify the memories, beliefs, emotions, and experiences you would like to focus on during your intensive. You'll also receive a customized workbook to help prepare for the process.

EMDR Intensive Therapy Session(s)

Your intensive takes place virtually and may include one, two, or three days of focused trauma treatment. Using Using EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness, grounding strategies, and other trauma-informed approaches, we'll work toward the goals identified during the preparation phase while taking breaks as needed.

Integration & Follow-Up

Approximately 2–4 weeks after your intensive, we'll meet for a 90-minute follow-up session to review progress, discuss any changes you've noticed, address remaining concerns, and determine next steps in your healing journey.

Could an EMDR Intensive Be a Good Fit for You?

EMDR Intensives can be a helpful option for individuals seeking focused support for birth trauma, reproductive trauma and loss, medical trauma, military-related trauma, first responder trauma, or childhood trauma.

The consultation and evaluation process helps determine whether an EMDR Intensive is the best fit for your needs. If another approach would be more supportive, we'll discuss recommendations together.

EMDR Intensives May Be a Good Fit If You:

✓ Are motivated to engage in focused trauma work

✓ Have a specific trauma target, memory, or treatment goal you would like to address

✓   Are interested in engaging in focused trauma processing with support

✓ Have limited availability for ongoing weekly therapy

✓ Are seeking a more concentrated approach to trauma treatment

Additional Stabilization May Be Needed First If You Are Experiencing:

✗ An active crisis that requires immediate support

✗ Current substance dependence that may interfere with treatment

✗ Significant dissociation that makes trauma processing unsafe or ineffective

✗ Severe symptoms that would benefit from additional stabilization before intensive work

What is an EMDR Intensive?

An EMDR Intensive is an extended therapy format that provides dedicated time for focused trauma treatment. Rather than meeting for 50–60 minutes each week, an intensive allows us to spend several hours—or multiple days—working toward specific treatment goals. EMDR Intensives include preparation, trauma processing, and follow-up support to help you continue your healing journey.

How is an intensive different from weekly therapy?

Both weekly therapy and EMDR Intensives can be effective approaches to trauma treatment. Weekly therapy provides ongoing support over time and allows space to integrate insights between sessions. EMDR Intensives offer a more concentrated approach by reducing interruptions between sessions and providing dedicated time to focus on specific trauma memories, experiences, or treatment goals.

Can EMDR Intensives help with birth trauma?

Yes. EMDR Intensives can be an effective option for individuals seeking support after a traumatic birth experience. This may include emergency cesarean birth, NICU experiences, medical complications, feeling unheard during labor, maternal near-death experiences, or fear related to future pregnancies. During your consultation, we will discuss whether an intensive is an appropriate fit for your needs.

Can EMDR Intensives help after pregnancy loss?

EMDR Intensives may be helpful for individuals processing the emotional impact of miscarriage, recurrent pregnancy loss, stillbirth, infant loss, TFMR, abortion experiences, or infertility-related trauma. Every experience is unique, and together we will determine the approach that best supports your healing goals.

Are virtual EMDR Intensives effective?

Research supports the effectiveness of virtual EMDR therapy for many individuals. Virtual EMDR Intensives allow you to participate from the comfort and privacy of your own environment while still receiving focused trauma treatment. During the consultation process, we will discuss whether a virtual intensive is appropriate for your situation.

How many memories can be processed during an intensive?

There is no set number of memories that can be processed during an EMDR Intensive. The pace and depth of treatment vary based on the complexity of the experiences being addressed, your goals, and your nervous system's readiness for processing. Rather than focusing on a specific number of memories, we focus on meaningful progress toward your treatment goals.

What happens after the intensive?

Approximately 2–4 weeks after your intensive, we will meet for a follow-up session to review your experience, discuss any changes you have noticed, address remaining concerns, and determine next steps. Some clients feel complete after their intensive, while others choose to continue with additional treatment or periodic support.

Can I continue working with my current therapist?

Yes. Many individuals participate in an EMDR Intensive while continuing to work with their current therapist. With your written permission, I am happy to collaborate with your therapist to support continuity of care and help integrate the work completed during the intensive.

Can EMDR Intensives help with medical trauma?

Yes. EMDR Intensives can be helpful for individuals who have experienced difficult medical procedures, unexpected diagnoses, hospitalizations, fertility treatments, traumatic healthcare experiences, or other medical events that continue to feel distressing. Together, we will determine whether an intensive is an appropriate approach for your treatment goals.

Do you offer intensives for military members and first responders?

Yes. I work with military members, veterans, first responders, and their family members who are seeking focused support for service-related trauma, operational stress, critical incidents, military sexual trauma (MST), workplace trauma, and other traumatic experiences. We will discuss your goals and determine whether an intensive is the best fit for your needs.

Do EMDR Intensives work for childhood trauma?

Yes. EMDR Intensives can be helpful for individuals seeking support for childhood trauma, attachment wounds, emotional neglect, parentification, abuse, and other early life experiences that continue to impact relationships, self-worth, emotional regulation, or daily functioning. The intensive format provides dedicated time to focus on these experiences in a structured and supportive environment.

How do I know if I am a good candidate?

EMDR Intensives may be a good fit for individuals who are motivated to engage in focused trauma work, have a specific treatment goal they would like to address, and are seeking a more concentrated approach than traditional weekly therapy. The consultation and evaluation process helps determine whether an intensive is appropriate for your current needs and goals.
